About Us

The DETC team, and the work we undertake, is split into:

  • Product Development
  • Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

The Digital Engineering and Test Centre (DETC) is a unique joint industry-academic centre of excellence within the Loughborough University London Campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. We develop and use virtual engineering tools and techniques to accelerate the development, test and manufacture of automotive propulsion systems. As an Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) spoke, DETC also brings specific functional, technological and regional capability to the APC network helping to deliver the reality of a Propulsion Nation.

The Centre’s work is driven by industry needs and will be focused on advanced propulsion technology in the UK. We develop tools & techniques to help solve some of the upcoming challenges facing automotive in the fields of design; development; manufacturing; testing; and validation & verification.
The DETC aims to put the UK at the forefront of product and manufacturing R&D and will enhance UK competitiveness through the application of rapidly evolving virtual engineering technology. The Centre will provide both critical mass and a catalyst for inward investment; it will also benefit from synergies with London’s wider digital economy.

The distinctive philosophy of the DETC is truly collaborative with an inclusive “affiliation” model of membership. It has been designed to be an asset for the entire UK automotive industry and is open to all.

You will see a very modern high quality office and laboratory facilities populated by academics (PhD level), co-located industry experts, and DETC core staff. This is a flexible, high-tech environment with development facilities, visualisation tools, demonstration displays, and links to the “Infinity” high-power computer cluster and global internet connection, hosted by Loughborough University London. (for more information about their department please visit the following link: Click Here)

It is a state-of-the-art, highly efficient, centre of excellence deploying next generation ‘virtual engineering’ tools for use by DETC Affiliates whilst working on DE&T related projects. It is the APC’s London office and the High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI).

Product Development

Product Development

This work will focus on a range of activities including advanced powertrain modelling techniques that will benefit future powertrain combinations including hybrid and plug in hybrid vehicles. These are collaborative workstreams leveraging the advantages of the unique skills set available from the affiliates, including skills brought in from outside the auto industry.

Advanced Manufacturing

Advanced Manufacturing

Manufacturing engineering projects include techniques and models to support new manufacturing facilities providing 3D visualisation as well as the ability to run virtual production trials and facilitate an error free transition from design to manufacture. These work streams are supported by leading OEMs, supply chain and academic partners.
